Christian getting chemo for childhood cancer

Laguna Niguel, California (PRWEB) May 19, 2012

The Gold Rush Cure Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising public awareness and funding for research to eradicate childhood cancer, today expressed praise for Health Canada’s decision to approve the stem cell therapy Prochymal® (remestemcel-L), for the treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) in children. Developed by Colombia, Md.-based Osiris Therapeutics, Prochymal is the world’s first approved stem cell drug, and the first treatment to be approved specifically for children suffering from GvHD, an often fatal complication from bone marrow transplants.

Gold Rush Cure Foundation (GRCF) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that raises vitally needed public awareness and funding for research to eradicate childhood cancer. GRCF was established in 2009 after President and Co-founder Sandy Baker lost her 14-year-old son, Christian, to GvHD, which he contracted after receiving a bone marrow transplant to treat a rare form of leukemia.

“Words cannot express how excited I am that Prochymal is being made available by Health Canada to children suffering from GvHD,” said Sandy Barker, president and co-founder of the Gold Rush Cure Foundation. “This landmark decision brings hope to all patients, families, and caregivers, and the work Osiris Therapeutics has done to develop Prochymal is admirable.”

About Christian Barker

At only 13-years-old, Christian was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. The treatment for this cancer required a bone marrow transplant. However, due to the aggressive nature of the cancer, Christian relapsed and a second transplant was conducted. The treatment regimen consisted of extreme chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple surgeries. Despite the negative side effects from those treatments, nothing compared to the brutal suffering which occurred after he contracted graft-vs.-host disease, which painfully destroyed every part of Christian’s body. The disease caused Christian’s skin to peel off, and he vomited several liters of blood daily due to the destruction of his gastro intestinal tract. To make matters even worse, Christian experienced liver failure and suffered daily with extreme pain from head to toe. This condition was prevalent for the four months, and eventually lead to his death. No child should have to suffer like this, and watching Christian’s body being destroyed by the disease was as horrifying for him as it was for his family and caregivers.

About Gold Rush Cure Foundation

After Christian died in December 2007, his mother and father, Sandy and Gary, established the Gold Rush Cure Foundation (GRCF), which is dedicated to raising public awareness and funding to help eradicate childhood cancer. GRCF is also committed to being advocates for children fighting cancer. In June, GRCF will be making its 11th trip to Washington, D.C., since Christian’s passing to meet with lawmakers about the vital need for more funding and awareness for childhood cancer, which is the leading cause of death by disease for children.
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

GTC Greening the Cleaning is excited to announce that its product line meets all of the conditions outlined in the top category of the Whole Foods Eco-Scale Rating System for Household Cleaners, the highest standards set by any green cleaning group.

The Whole Foods System requires that products designated in the “green” category meet very stringent criteria, and GTC meets them all with flying colors: our products have been third-party tested and verified; we fully disclose all ingredients on our packaging labels; we don’t use any phosphates, chlorine, or synthetic colors; and everything we put into GTC products is environmentally safe, preservative-free, and made from plant- and mineral-derived ingredients.

“Whole Foods has taken great initiative by creating a rating system that will help consumers make informed, safe, healthy decisions about their household cleaning products,” said Deirdre Imus, founder and President of the Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center. “This is exactly what the world of green cleaning has been waiting for, and I’m so proud of our team at Greening the Cleaning for meeting every single one of the conditions to be considered one of the greenest product lines on the market.”

In accordance with the strict standards of the Whole Foods Eco-Scale Rating System, GTC does not test on animals; uses 100 percent natural fragrances and petroleum-free ingredients; and ensures all preservatives are formaldehyde-free.

GTC is effective enough for leading hospitals, safe enough for children’s playrooms, and easy on the environment. For more information or to purchase GTC for your home or business, please visit http://www.greeningthecleaning.com, or call 1-888-281-7625.

About Greening the Cleaning

From Ranch to Hospital to Home

In 1998, Deirdre and Don Imus founded The Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer in Ribera, New Mexico. Deirdre is passionate about keeping this healing environment toxin-free. No junk food and no harsh chemical cleansers allowed! After seeing kids thrive at the ranch, she was inspired to bring this lifestyle to another healing place: the hospital. She worked with a team of experts at the Hackensack University Medical Center to develop a line of cleaning products that are effective enough for leading hospitals, but safe enough for children’s playrooms.

Greening the Cleaning strives to eliminate all cleaning agents containing hazardous ingredients, and replace them with environmentally responsible, less toxic products wherever possible.

We proudly disclose all of our ingredients. All GTC products are derived from renewable natural resources like plants and fruits. They are safe for our water, soil, food chain and our children.

100% of all profits from our GTC product line go to the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit.

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

The potential dangers of Genetically Modified Foods have been well documented in recent years. However, recent medical research combined with new documentation posted at health and wellness portal BeWellBuzz.com has discovered a new batch of potentially harmful side-effects which GMO’s transfer to the human body.

Genetically modified foods (GMO) are those foods that are primarily derived from genetically modified organisms. These genetically derived organisms have undergone specific changes to their DNA using genetic engineering techniques that exploit the natural forms of gene transfer. Scientists at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have warned about potential health problems associated with GMO’s as far back as the early 1990’s. According to documents released from a lawsuit, the scientific consensus at the agency was that GMO foods were inherently dangerous, and might create hard-to-detect allergies, poisons, gene transfer to gut bacteria, new diseases, and nutritional problems.

“The GM soybean and corn varieties used in the feeding trials ‘constitute 83 percent of the commercialized GMOs’ that are currently consumed by billions of people,” stated a research paper documented by the Institute for Responsible Technology. “While the findings may have serious ramifications for the human population, the authors demonstrate how a multitude of GMO-related health problems could easily pass undetected through the superficial and largely incompetent safety assessments that are used around the world.”

In recent months, doctors have deferred to prescribe GM-free diets to their patients. According to Dr. Amy Dean, a Michigan internal medicine specialist, and board member of AAEM, “I strongly recommend patients eat strictly non-genetically modified foods.” Ohio allergist Dr. John Boyles continues to go on the record about the dangers of GMO foods by stating, “I used to test for soy allergies all the time, but now that soy is genetically engineered, it is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it.”

After reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, world renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava concluded that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans. American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has been warning use of GM foods and how these genetically modified foods are a threat to human health. However, the production and sale of GMO’s continues and it is left to consumers to decide whether it is suitable for consumption.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 06, 2012

Sporting goods stores in the United States have been flexing their retail muscles over the five years to 2012. Driven by rising consumer awareness of good health and participation in sports, revenue is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 0.6% over the five years from 2007. Not all news has been good for the industry, though; increasing levels of competition from department stores and mass merchandisers have restrained growth, says IBISWorld industry analyst Dale Schmidt. In addition, a decline in disposable income during the recession has adversely affected industry sales. However, as consumer spending conditions rebound in 2012 with the general economic recovery, IBISWorld expects industry sales to also increase over the year. From 2011 to 2012, revenue is estimated to rise 3.0% to total $ 39.8 billion. Historically, sporting goods stores were small, family-owned businesses that serviced the needs of the local community. Wholesalers were the primary suppliers of merchandise, and operators had little or no competition from other retailers because of their high level of specialization. During the past two decades, the arena for sporting goods retailers has changed, with industry players evolving into national chains that have considerable buying power.

The Sporting Goods Stores industry’s transformation has had its perils, Schmidt said. The rise in national sporting chain numbers has effectively created an opportunity for department stores and mass merchandisers to enter the market and aim for a share of the sporting pie. The entry of these external players has led to increased levels of competition in an already tightening retail market. As a result, industry operators have consolidated. Over the five years to 2012, the industry is expected to contract to 36,528 enterprises at an annualized rate of 1.4%. Despite the rise in competition, sporting goods retailers have continued to benefit from their ability to offer consumers specific brands, specialized service and extra services like rock climbing walls and putting greens to test out equipment before it is purchased.

In the five years to 2017, growth will return, stimulated by a recovery in consumer sentiment and increased disposable income. Additionally, as more Americans participate in sports, they become more inclined to purchase sporting equipment. Revenue is forecast to grow through 2017. The industry’s major players are Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc., Foot Locker Inc. and The Sports Authority Inc.
Sporting goods stores retail new sporting goods, including bicycles, camping equipment, exercise and fitness equipment, apparel, footwear and other sporting goods and accessories. Products are sourced from sporting goods manufacturers and wholesalers and then sold to the general public via retail stores. Department stores, mass merchants and retailers that exclusively retail apparel are not included in this industry.

Farmers participating in this agriculture business saw unprecedented increases in income.

The project directly benefitted over 18,400 small-sized farmers in the area who are organized in 38 cooperatives. Average income of farmers who participated in the project increased from US$ 5,161 a year to US$ 12,713 a year as a result of project activities, a 146% increase. Indirectly, the project impacted a larger population of nearly 80,000 people.

The project’s main activities included providing training and technical assistance to improve the quality of agricultural products; improving management of storage, processing and marketing; and strengthening two Centers for Rural Development, founded and supported by PCI in collaboration with a local partner. These Centers for Rural Development are at the core of PCI’s US Department of Agriculture-funded Food for Progress program, and PCI’s goal is to transition them into self-sustaining resource institutions.

The project used different educational methods including Farmer Field Schools, workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and targeted technical assistance. PCI trained a total of 3,995 farmers on agricultural topics including agronomical management of farms; integrated management of coffee, corn, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, onions and other crops; and the use of pest management techniques.

The Farmer Field Schools for farmers and their children have been a particularly successful strategy to teach farming best practices. Rubén Sanabria, a member of the board of a beneficiary cooperative in Jalapa, Nueva Segovia, explains that “the Farmer Field Schools implemented by PCI have allowed the cooperative’s leadership to reach out to its members and they have had a great impact. Today our members have installed a number of cutting-edge technologies in their coffee plantations, including more than 500 low-cost, hand-made pest traps, and more than 174 acres of coffee plantations have been protected with soil conservation techniques…You can see the difference between producers who have participated in Farmer Field Schools and those who haven’t. Because of all these results, the cooperative has decided to implement additional Field Schools on its own.”

Another successful activity was the distribution of agricultural inputs and resources to the cooperatives, allowing them to establish their own “in-kind” lending programs with their respective members. A total of $ 2,293,443 have been distributed to 3,892 farmers in the form of loans, with a total of 7,760 number of loans allocated. This activity has produced a huge impact in local communities where small farmers do not have access to the local banking system.

PCI also trained and helped 4,053 farmers implement farm assessments and plans in their farms, in order to improve the management of their farms, increase profitability and strengthen rural value chains. Farm assessments provide information on the most profitable crops to be produced on the farm, cash flow available, and other information that may be used to equip farmers to add value to their agriculture production and access new markets (such as “fair trade” certified).

With 79.9% of its population living on $ 2 or less per day, Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. While 46% of the population lives below the poverty line, the incidence of poverty in rural areas (68%) is more than twice as high as that of urban areas (29%). Nicaragua’s health, nutrition, and other indicators are also among the lowest in Latin America. According to the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education, 31.5% of all children are anemic and 46% of children suffer from chronic malnutrition in Nicaragua. Further, Nicaragua is primarily an agricultural economy, yet the country must import cooking oil, wheat and basic grains to meet demand for food; and many citizens still face a daily struggle to obtain adequate food for themselves and their families.

“PCI is proud to help these rural communities in Nicaragua increase their capacity for more successful harvests. We are committed to strengthening these communities, helping them increase their productivity, find practical solutions, and build toward a better future,“ commented George Guimaraes, CEO of PCI.

PCI has worked in Nicaragua for 21 years implementing a wide range of interventions in the areas of community health, maternal and child health, school feeding, water and sanitation, emergency relief and much more, directly benefiting a total more than 300,000 people overall during these 21 years.

Denver, Colo. (PRWEB) April 25, 2012

State health officials at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are using this year’s National Infant Immunization Week, April 21-28, to urge parents not to delay getting their children needed vaccinations in keeping with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended vaccine schedule.

“The recent whooping cough outbreak in Boulder, and other similar outbreaks across the country, underscore the need for parents to get their children vaccinated according to the schedule created by the CDC,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, director of the Immunization Section at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

While clearly in the minority, some Colorado parents are choosing to vaccinate their children on delayed or “alternative” schedules. One such delayed schedule recommended by author Dr. Bob Sears has been especially popular among parents choosing to put off some of their child’s vaccinations. A 2010 study in the respected journal Pediatrics showed that delayed vaccination schedules provide no additional benefit over the CDC recommended schedule.

Dr. Herlihy noted that concerns about vaccinations often come from a sense that babies’ bodies can’t handle the vaccines. “That is simply not true,” she said. “There is no such thing as overwhelming the immune system with shots. Even infant immune systems have an almost limitless ability to respond to new germs. And the number of antigens or germs in childhood vaccines is a drop in the bucket compared to what young children’s immune systems are naturally exposed to every day.”

Dr. James Todd, medical director for epidemiology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, has conducted new research on vaccine use in Colorado. “The ‘too many too soon’ myth puts the health of our youngest children and their playmates at risk,” Dr. Todd said. “Research we have just completed shows we’re falling behind in the early childhood vaccine schedule in Colorado. We’re falling behind with the youngest children. This is significant because typically we see most vaccine-preventable disease in children up to 36 months of age.”

A March whooping cough (pertussis) outbreak in Boulder County sickened at least 37 people. Six of the diagnosed cases were children under age 9, and one infant required intensive-care hospitalization. Whooping cough is a vaccine-preventable illness, and delaying children’s pertussis immunizations significantly increases their risk of contracting this disease.

National Infant Immunization Week is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs and their partners in promoting healthy communities.

Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases. That is why it is critical to protect them through immunization. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States, and all of them need to be immunized against 14 vaccine-preventable diseases before age 2.

A 2010 national survey showed that 88 percent of parents follow CDC’s recommended vaccine schedule. However, some parents still have concerns about vaccine safety due, in part, to a now completely discredited British study that connected autism to childhood vaccines.

Recognizing some parents may have concerns about vaccine safety, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment partnered with other organizations to create the website, http://www.immunizeforgood.com, to inform parents about which vaccines are needed, and why they’re important.

In the United States, vaccines have reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases that once routinely harmed or killed thousands of infants and young children each year. However, the viruses and bacteria that cause vaccine-preventable disease and death still exist and can be passed on to people who are not immunized.

Vaccine-preventable diseases have many social and economic costs. These diseases result in doctor visits, hospitalizations and even death. Sick children miss school and can cause parents to lose time from work.

In addition to the http://www.immunizeforgood.com website, parents are encouraged to access other credible resources regarding immunizations. Both http://www.cdc.gov and http://www.cdphe.state.co.us also provide great vaccination resources.

The soft-baked and fruit-filled bar is a tasty snack that curbs hunger and satisfies women’s cravings between meals.

With the understanding that women are no longer adhering to traditional eating patterns and are instead choosing to snack when and where most appropriate for their often busy schedules,(ii) LUNA Fiber serves as a delicious, portable option to fit into any schedule, wrapped in a new attractive package that is a visual treat as well.

“LUNA Fiber not only offers an excellent source of fiber, but it also includes vitamins and minerals that are most essential to women’s health, such as calcium, folic acid, iron and vitamin D,” said Tara DelloIacono-Thies, Registered Dietitian and manager of nutrition strategy for LUNA. “Women shouldn’t have to choose between nutrition and great taste—they are looking for a snack that multi-tasks as much as they do.”

LUNA Fiber comes in three flavors: Peanut Butter Strawberry, Blueberry Vanilla, and Chocolate Raspberry.

About “The Power of Snacking: The Next Decade of Women’s Changing Nutrition Report”

In July 2011, LUNA and the Institute for the Future conducted a research project to identify, analyze and forecast the significant trends and forces shaping the way American women snack. The report looks at the transformation in snacking from the perspective of four generational bands of American women and forecasts the values, attitudes, and behaviors they will adopt to navigate the complex decade ahead. The study’s findings were derived from a combination of exploratory group interviews and in-home interviews with women across four age ranges with a good mix of ethnicity, occupations and household configurations.

The report and related research materials are available at http://www.thepowerofsnacking.com

Dr. Van Veldhuizen explains, “We use cutting-edge technology and research to best serve patients experiencing chronic fatigue and adrenal stress in Dallas. Our patients experience more than just symptomatic relief from their primary condition; they gain a lifetime of optimal health throughout their whole body.

Van Family Chiropractic offers a holistic approach to healthcare.

Studies suggest that 80% of people experience adrenal fatigue and/or stress at some point in their lives and do not realize it. The adrenal glands produce hormones that are responsible for many important bodily functions such as:

Producing energy
Regulating blood pressure
Normalizing blood sugar
Balancing fluids and electrolytes
Responding appropriately to stress

In addition, they work with other systems and glands to maintain general health and wellness. The increased pressures of an active lifestyle are some of the causes of adrenal stress.

Symptoms of adrenal stress include:

    Chronic tiredness
Difficulty getting up in the morning and/or still feeling tired after a night’s sleep
Low-energy during the day
Decreased ability to handle stress
Decreased immune system
Depression
Anxiety and irritability
Mood swings
Hormonal changes
Muscular weakness
